Key Features
Thomastik Spirocores are a versatile and popular range of strings for double bass, often regarded as a "reference standard" for jazz musicians and pizzicato bass players, these offer exceptional timbre and performance when plucked. The flexible multi-wire spiral core, made from high tensile steel, provides a balanced tone with huge amounts of clarity in sound production.
When played pizz the core provides a growl to the tone that is very often associated with the double bass. The chrome winding adds a touch of brightness to the sound, highlighting the growl from the spiral core. These strings are renowned for their pizz performance and have lots of sustain.

Many of the strings in the Spirocore range are available in different tensions. You can choose the best strings for your instrument and playing style with this choice. For double bass, lighter strings tend to be less tiring to play and are therefore better for longer periods of playing. Lighter strings also often have a longer sustain when plucked, making them better for some jazz musicians. Heavier strings tend to be the loudest strings, however, they are also the hardest to play as they require more physical strength and effort. Medium is in between and is often recommended to start with if you're unsure of what will work better for you. Spirocores are also available in several sizes from large full-size (4/4) basses to small 1/4 size basses.
Thomastik Spirocores are a comprehensive range. The full-size and 3/4-size strings each have optional extra strings to purchase for players who own 5-string basses (both high C and low B available) or have a low C extension on their bottom string. A set and individual strings are also available in solo tuning at a major second higher than standard. The selection of solo strings also includes strings for basses with extensions (low D) and fifth strings (low C#).
