A first of its kind, the Lowdown was the original foot-controlled bass synthesizer. Pioneering in both design and sound, the original Lowdown can be heard on some chart-topping tracks from the '70s and '80s including Rush, Yes, Genesis, U2, The Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and Phil Collins' "I Don't Care Anymore". Praised for its thunderous sound that had both depth and articulation, the Cherry Audio Lowdown Bass Synth harnesses the energy and power that the original hardware delivered in abundance.
Expertly engineered and ahead of the curve, the hardware synthesizer was designed using a Hz/Oct oscillator scaling instead of the more conventional volt/Oct. This clever design element changed the way the oscillator detuning amount occurred by remaining constant across the keyboard and therefore minimising phase cancellation of two simultaneous oscillators. This small change contributed widely to the overall sound of the hardware, beefing up the tone to create the signature warmth, depth and punch it was renowned for.
This made the analysis and modelling of the hardware more tricky than other synthesizers and so a collaboration between Cherry Audio and DSP legend Mark Barton was realised to fully capture the essential tone and response.
