Parts that make a whole
Breaking down your audio into many different 'grains', FRAGMENTS encompasses a select few simple-to-use modules to make complicated processing easy! Interacting with each other in exciting ways, you have full control from start to finish on a variety of parameters from quantization, envelope, FX, panning, capturing and much more.
All starting at the Buffer, this is where incoming audio is partitioned into grains, giving you an overview of FRAGMENTS behaviour, you can adjust the buffer length, tweak the feedback levels, customise your recording points and playback direction or even freeze the buffer for static grains.
After the Buffer, grains are analysed by the Grain Capture module. Streamlined and straightforward, here you can adjust the speed Offset manually or sync to your project tempo. Quantization is made possible here, to match your grains to hits and swells or introduce 'sprays' at random, manually selected points throughout the grain length.
The core of Efx FRAGMENTS, the Grain Release module encompasses an array of parameters to control every aspect of your grains. Alter the density, pitch-shifting, stereo width and shape and using the proprietary Spatializer, you have visual feedback over your processing.
Moving to the creative functions of FRAGMENTS, the Panning and FX sections let you enhance the spatial positioning of your sound in a 3D space. Algorithms including multi-mode filters, tape delay, stereo flanging and more make up the two FX slots, letting you take your creativity even further, enhancing your sound with professional-grade effects.
In keeping with the rest of Arturia virtual instruments and FX plugins, Efx FRAGMENTS comes armed with a host of dynamic modulation and expression tools. Assign Macros to multiple parameters for real-time sweeping effects, make your grains respond to each beat with a built-in Envelope Follower, and create custom functions and step sequences.
Take your music to new levels
Effortlessly transform and instantly inspire your creativity. So with all of these modules, what can you achieve with FRAGMENTS? From dramatic stutters and glitches to the atmospheric pads, virtually nothing is off the table here.
One of the most common uses of granular processing is rhythmic complexity. Glitches and stutters can all serve to add dynamic and movement to simple drum beats or synthesizer patterns. Build tension and sprinkle variety into your beats, compositions and soundscapes with dramatic stop-start stutters, pitch-shifted fluctuations and reality-shattering glitches.
Use it how you want
Entering the world of granular audio processing for the first time is understandably overwhelming. Boundless possibilities and potential for sonic chaos, Efx FRAGMENTS has simplified the processing with three clearly defined modes for inspiring results, regardless of your previous experience.
As the name suggests, Classic mode offers the broadest range of tones in a customisable format. Capable of producing everything from length, chaotic reverbs or fast snippets of granular destruction, Classic is the perfect place to start.
The second mode, Rhythmic lets syncs grain size and length with tempo-matched values to your project. Using the Rhythmic mode, FRAGMENTS can be utilised to create creative delays, pulses, flutters and more, all matched to your music. Spice up your drum loops, guitar chords and arpeggios or synthesizer stabs with mangled rhythmic complexity.
Ideal for the contemporary sound designer, producer or DJ, Arturia Efx FRAGMENTS' Texture mode lets you design clouds of sound with precise macro controls. Ethereal drones and organic-like tones are just a touch away with Texture mode, letting FRAGMENTS blend grains together for musically-related, harmonious tones that could inspire your next movie or game soundtrack or add dimension to your live DJ performances.
What is granular synthesis?
Granular processing involves splitting any incoming sound into many different parts, or 'grains', before sending these grains into different processors for unique and creative effects. Hence the name, each grain can be manipulated and altered by changing the length of each grain, the space between them, their pitch and much more. The result is a sound that's entirely indistinguishable from the original and could sound like an entirely new sound previously unheard of, every time you go to use it. Fragments is no exception and offers the tools to let you create anything from smooth and transparent raindrop-like delay to sharp and cascading modulated verbs. No other processing tool comes close to the uniqueness of Efx FRAGMENTS granular processing.
Reviews
"Manipulate the audio, create huge atmospheric layers or interesting rhythmic patterns that sync to the track. It's such a great plug-in for creating exciting and unique parts to a production with the audio you already have." - Romesh Dodangoda (Producer / Mixer - Bring Me The Horizon, Funeral For A Friend, Twin Atlantic)
"This is the stuff dreams are made of." - Gareth Jones (Music Director)
"I'm a big fan of the way you can spice up even quite plain tones into something epic. It instantly satisfies your creative streak and at a fraction of the cost of a eurorack module." - Steve Levine (Producer / Engineer - Culture Club, Beach Boys)
"Fragments combines quick usable results with a seriously powerful granular engine the hood that has endless possibilities for the deep diving sound designer." - Si Begg (Composer - Netflix)
