Phase distortion synthesis
By experimenting with the linearity of how a simple waveform plays, CZ V can produce complex sounds with plenty of depth and nuance. CZ V uses a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) which runs into a digitally controlled waveshaper (DCW) and digitally controlled amplifier (DCA), where each DCO lets you select from the original eight waveforms, or draw entirely new ones. Additionally, there are serial combinations of two different waveforms simultaneously for even more sound possibilities. The DCW includes key follow and an eight-stage envelope generator to animate the level of waveshaping that modulates over time. Plus, there's an eight-stage envelope for DCO frequency that allows for exciting pitch effects beyond vibrato, trills and lasers. Finally, the DCA also presents an eight-stage envelope to shape sounds dynamically.
CZ V offers two complete DCO>DCW>DCA signal lines that can work individually or in parallel. Either duplicate settings for a fatter sound, or separate settings provide for more complex timbres. For example, CZ V presents the ability to combine a percussive sound and a pad into a complex compound. CZ V also offers a range of features authentic to the original including a dedicated vibrato section, polyphonic portamento, ring modulation, and noise modulation.
Authentic and recognisable interface
The original CZ boasted an instant and intuitive interface, and Arturia has taken this to the next level with a modern reproduction designed for enhanced speed and performance in every aspect. See exactly what is happening to your sound with a central display unit that demonstrates how the waveforms morph as you play. Four sliders offer the ability to control multiple parameters at once for subtle or drastic performance action. The dedicated vibrato section now comes with more waveforms, tempo sync, and adjustable delay. A classic arpeggiator brings exciting sequences to the CZ-V with six patterns including as-played and random over a four-octave range. It is easier than ever to define each signal line with the ability to hear line one, both lines, or line 1 plus a copy of itself. Plus, you can noise modulate both lines with ease. Finally, instantly toggle into mono mode for thick leads on solos, and back to poly for playing chords with a single button.
Advanced panel
Take the distinct CZ sound to the next level with a comprehensive advanced panel. The advanced panel offers a host of features that could hardly be dreamt of when the original was released, but now the CZ V makes it more intuitive than ever to take phase distortion as far as it can go. Define separate target waveforms for the first and second cycles in each line to create distinct harmonic motion. As well as offering all eight of the original hardware's eight waveforms, CZ V offers the ability to draw and save unique waveforms to produce any sound imaginable. Define movement with surgical precision thanks to eight envelopes, separate for pitch, PD amount (DCW), amp, and modulation for each line to produce sounds that move and evolve in fascinating ways. Assign multiple sources to a huge range of destinations with a bottomless mod matrix to develop intricate weaving modulations. All new assignable LFOs and envelopes can be blended together into something completely different using Combinator slots. Finally, Arturia has included a range of studio-quality effects to run lines one and two through in series or parallel.
