Key Features
The Doepfer A-173-1/2 is a dual module that can be used as a micro keyboard or a manual gate. It is made up of two separate sections; A-173-1 and A-173-2. These are linked together internally by a two-wire 30cm cable - allowing you to place these two parts apart from each other in your setup.
A-173-1 is the transmitter segment, comprised of a 1½ octaves micro keyboard and octave switch with three positions. A-173-2 is the receiver module, generating gate/trigger signals and a 1V/Oct. CV signal based on the transmitter. These can be configured, allowing for complex control of your modular synth.

For every key on the A-173-1, there is a corresponding gate output on the A-173-2. These can be set to one of two modes with the "Learn Trigs" button. The first is a gate, where pressing a key turns the gate on, and releasing it turns it off. The second is a toggle, where pressing a key changes the state, and pressing it again changes the state again.
As each key can be configured separately, you can have several performing a range of different functions. This gives you maximum flexibility, and a wide range of controls to use for a wide range of tasks.
In the lower section of the A-173-2 there is a 1V/Octave CV output, along with a gate signal. As a result it's ideal for controlling an oscillator's pitch and an amplitude envelope in the common way. This allows you to use this module as a mini performance keyboard, or for changing the pitch of sequences.
You can also use the "Learn CV" button to use the individual gates as well as the CV signal. When you hold this down and choose a key, it determines where the split between gate and CV section occurs. This allows you to have a mix of two different control methods at once.
